RAF Finningley Scenery

RAF Finningley, is located 7.5 miles SE of Doncaster, Sth Yorkshire, and opened in 1936 as a bomber station.

After 21 years the main runway was extended to 9000' and in 1957 the station became home to 101 Squadron operation the Avro Vulcan.

A year later 18 Sqn moved in with Vickers Valiants.

In December 1969, the station was closed and placed under care and maintenance pending a change in it's role. Finningley was to become the RAF's navigator training school, part of 6FTS. Operating Jet Provosts and Dominies, they were later joind by the Jetstreams of M.E.T.S. Multi Engine Training School. For the next 15 years RAF Finningley became one of the busiest airfields in the RAF.

After 60 of operation, it was decided that the RAF no longer needed such a large nav school and in 1996 the station closed.

The airfield was sold to Peel holdings who have now re-opened the airfield as Doncaster Robin Hood airport.
