The Key West International Airport is a 255-acre (103-hectare) facility with one asphalt-paved runway (9/27) measuring 4,801 x 100 feet (1,463 x 30 m). The airport handled 94,408 aircraft operations in 2006, an average of 258 per day. This airport is now known as a challenging airport due to its runway, but it continues to operate with A319s and B737s on a daily basis. The story behind the use of such aircraft dates back to the 1980s, when boatloads of Cubans arrived on the shores of the Florida Keys, prompting the US Border Patrol to set up roadblocks or areas where all cars leaving Key West would be searched to see if there were any Cuban immigrants. Well, this had a significant impact on Key West's commerce, particularly tourism. That prompted Monroe County (on which Key West is located) to declare the Conch Republic, symbolically seceding from the United States. Eastern Airlines seized the opportunity and began flying B727-100s out of Miami to the short KEYW runway. It was the first time a plane took off from Key West.
