Located nine miles north-west of the centre of York and directly north of Linton-on-Ouse village, this airfield was built 1936-38 under the Expansion scheme. The camp of brick flat-roofed permanent buildings was immediately adjacent to the village and at the south-east corner of the landing ground. Four Type C hangars formed a crescent before the landing ground with a fifth placed behind the westernmost hangar of the line.
For the duration of the war Linton was a Bomber Command station within 6 Group and was home to Whitleys, Halifax'and Lancasters. Then in June 1946 Linton became a Fighter Command station with Mosquitos, Hornets and Meteors and then briefly Sabres then Hunters on station up to 1957.
The next phase in Linton-on-Ouse's history was training activities with No. 1 Flying Training School first with Vampires and then Jet Provosts and currently Tucanos. There are also Air Cadet gliding facilities.
The scenery depicts Linton-on-Ouse as it may have looked in the late 50s with 92 & 66 Sqns equiped with the Hawker Hunter F Mk6 in residence.
AI Hunters of both squadrons populate the aprons along with ground support equipment and venerable AEC Matador bowsers.
