Bydgoszcz Ignacy Jan Paderewski Airport (IATA: BZG, ICAO: EPBY) is a Polish regional airport in the Polish city of Bydgoszcz. It is only 3.5 km (2.2 mi) from the city center and about 50 km from Toru. In terms of passenger traffic, it is Poland's eleventh largest airport. In 2018, the airport served 413,245 passengers. It has one terminal and four runways, the main one being 2,500 m x 60 m (8,202 ft x 197 ft).
During World War I, the Bydgoszcz Airport was built for the German army. The airport was taken over by the Wielkopolska Army in 1920, and it has since served the Polish army under the Treaty of Versailles. Civil aviation flights began in 1929, when LOT Polish Airlines began service to Gdask, Warsaw, and Pozna. These connecting flights were in operation until 1933.
The airport underwent numerous developments during World War II and its aftermath. However, the LOT Polish Airlines connecting flights were not reactivated until 1948, and operated from Bydgoszcz until 1981, with a 10-year break in the 1960s. Flights to Pozna and Gdask have yet to be canceled. Bydgoszcz-Warsaw was the longest remaining link.
The year 1992 marked the beginning of an eventful period of economic development, which included the construction of Bydgoszcz's civil airport. The Bydgoska Korporacja Lotnicza Sp. z o.o. (The Bydgoszcz Aviation Corporation Ltd) was founded and operated for this purpose until 1995. It was then restructured and transformed into Port Lotniczy Bydgoszcz S.A., which currently manages the airport. The establishment of an international airport was one of the company's most significant accomplishments.
On May 1, 2004, a new modern terminal building opened, earning the airport the title of 'Firma Roku 2003' (The Company of the Year 2003), awarded for the company's significant contribution to the development of the region as well as the promotion of aviation. On January 31, 2004, the company was also presented with a 'Polski Klub Biznesu' statue (Polish Business Club).
